The Department for Transport has today committed £60m of the £67.6m pot required for the much-anticipated A361 North Devon Link Road widening project, and work is expected to start shortly.
This is long overdue and great news – not least because it will make it easier (and safer) for us to get to our favourite beaches. It will also unlock plans for 6,700 much-needed homes in the district.
The Devon County Council-led scheme extends nearly five miles between Filleigh Cutting near South Molton and Portmore Roundabout on the edge of Barnstaple. It will widen the road to allow the provision of three traffic lanes. Eight key junctions will also be upgraded, and provision made for pedestrians and cyclists.
