Helping Canal with Grand Western Strategy

We’re thrilled to be working with the Friends of The Grand Western Canal on the brand positioning and fundraising strategy for an ambitious new project which aims to reinvigorate a somewhat neglected yet potential-filled area near Taunton, Somerset.

The project seeks to regenerate an historic section of the canal and create a ‘green link’ between the West Somerset Railway and Taunton town centre. Adjacent to the Silk Mills park and ride in Taunton, a fully-functioning replica of the pioneering ‘James Green vertical boat lift’ is proposed, which will be the first of its kind since 1838. Along with a visitor centre, this will provide an opportunity to promote Somerset’s fascinating story of engineering, past and present, while creating an exciting new asset for locals and visitors alike.

The scheme will generate a beautiful new Public Open Space area for Taunton, and support the town’s status as a Garden Town.

Longer term, the goal is to enable visitors and commuters alike to sustainably travel into the heart of Taunton via solar-powered shuttle boats, thus continuing Taunton’s pioneering story.

The scheme already has the support of many community leaders and residents, including local MPs Rebecca Pow and Neil Parish.

Our first task is to help sharpen the project’s proposition and help it raise £35,000 to commission a feasibility study.
